Opened on Friday 5th April by His Royal Highness The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay The Tamar Manoukian Outdoor Centre at Dumfries House, Ayrshire, Scotland will provide accommodation and team activities for approximately 60 people.
2012 was a very busy year for Elegant Shot Photography and with wedding and portraiture assignment taking place on a weekly basis, the Elegant Shot Blog has been somewhat neglected. So in a bid to getting things up to date, we thought we’d start by including some of last years wedding shots:
This is a couple of shots from William & Cheryl’s wedding. The wedding ceremony was held at the Castlehill Church in Ayr, with the reception taking place at the Piersland House Hotel in Troon.
Due to being late November and the ceremony taking place at 2:30 in the afternoon, the light was limited therefore most of the shots were taken indoors.
The positioning of the Bride and Groom came as a surprise despite myself having spoken to the Registrar prior to the proceedings. The last minute decision to have the Bride positioned facing the guests left me facing the Groom. Luckily however I was allowed to move around and managed to reposition myself to face the Bride.
The brolly in this shot is actually performing as a brolly and not just a prop, it was raining!
Another wedding on the same weekend saw Shane and Lynn getting Married . The full ceremony took place at the Gailes Hotel in Irvine:
Elegant Shot Photography Ayrshire covered the opening of the newly refurbished New Cumnock Primary School for PR company, The Big Partnership. Barr Construction’s site manager Callum Haining, who carried out the refurbishment was also present at the event.
Tom Hunter, Scotland’s first ever home-grown billionaire at the official opening of the refurbished New Cumnock Primary School.
Flash Bang Wallop!

The dreaded happened – I forgot to lock the 580EXii in place! With tripod and camera in one hand and large equipment bag in the other, there was nothing I could do but watch in perfect slow motion, as it bounced onto the tiled church floor. Luckily the only thing damaged was the diffuser panel.
That was two months ago and it’s been bugging me ever since to get it fixed. I seldom used the panel as the light’s too harsh for most situations, so there was no real need to get it replaced, but being a bit of a perfectionist I decided to get it repaired.
I managed to source the diffuser without difficulty but couldn’t get anything other than text info on the disassembly of the unit, so if you’re here because you’ve suffered the same fate, I hope this guide helps you out.
Word of caution: Remove the batteries. Even with the batteries removed the capacitor can still give you a nasty shock so it would be safer to discharge it first. I managed to avoid one but be warned! Remember that opening the unit will invalidate you warranty and by carrying out any repairs on the unit, you do so at your own risk.
1: New diffuser panel top right. Old diffuser panel with broken lug, bottom left and the white catch light card on the right.
2: Diffuser panel comes complete with hinge
3: Undo the two small screws from the rear of the unit using a watchmakers screwdriver.
4: Gently lever off the rubber seal using a flat screwdriver. The seal on either side is held by a tacky glue which was strong enough to reseal on reassembly. Remove the 6x screws (3x on each side) being careful not to drop them.
5: Seals and screws 8x removed
6: Gently prise the two sides apart to reveal the flash tube housing. Using a small piece of Blu-tack on the end of the screwdriver remove the 2x screws holding the white housing.
7: A small ribbon cable is attached at the rear of the tube housing and care must be taken not exert any pressure.
8: By moving the tube housing slightly to the side a further 4x screws can be found: see bottom left of the picture below. When they have been removed the diffuser cover will fall free revealing the diffuser panel holder.
9: The hinge can now be removed without any difficulty.
10: The new panel in place with the spring to the bottom. The white catch-light card has a small rectangle hole which aligns with the diffuser. Use a small piece of Blu-tack again to hold the catch-light to the diffuser – making sure to place the Blu-tack near to the rectangle hole so it can be removed easily after full assembly.
Note: The white catch-light has a slight bevel which matches the casing of the unit and thus should be aligned to match.
11: Assembly is a straight forward reversal of the disassemble process, nothing difficult. Use the good old Blu-tack to stick the screws to the driver, screw them in and the jobs done!
12: Load the batteries and test.
13: Looking healthy!!
Hope this helps

One of the services Elegant Shot Ltd wedding photographers Ayrshire provide, is the “Pre-wedding Photo-shoot”. This is when we get to meet the couple prior to their big day to take a series of candid and posed photographs.
Being free, fun and informal, the photo-shoot helps build the couples confidence in our ability and prepares them for what to expect on the big day. The location of the shoot is not important; it can be arranged in a park, at a stately home or castle, or even at the couple’s home. At this stage there’s no commitment expected from the couple, the decision on whether or not to use our services is made after they have received the images from the shoot.
Sunday 20th May, 2012 – Dumfries House
Bella, the happy couple’s 17 week old K9 friend creating some action….
Ayrshire wedding photographers Elegant Shot Ltd, turned up at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire for Jim and Leanne’s pre wedding photography. They were also joined by the happy couple’s K9 friend Bella.
It was a heavily overcast sky for Brian & Susan’s pre-wedding photo-shoot at Kilwinning Abbey, North Ayrshire, but it remained dry.
Looking for interesting shots: View of the Abbey through one of the many arches.
With a contrast in the weather a few days later, we paid visit to Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, to meet Cheryl and William for their pre-wedding photography. Finding shade for the photography wasn’t a problem on the estate, towering 130 year old Wellingtonias provided plenty; and daffodils and the wide open landscape complete the perfect set.

Playing about with a couple of flashes in the studio. 5D Mkii, 24-105mm f/4L and two 580EXii Flash Guns mounted on wireless triggers. I’ll post some shots of the set-up and the gear used shortly.
A basic set-up but it worked quite well.

Glen Orchy, Scotland, 25-26th Nov, 2011
We spent the Thursday & Friday at the end of November at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel. It was my birthday present from my wife Debs, also an Ayrshire wedding photographer with Elegant Shot, and it was greatly appreciated. We both love photography with a passion, so getting into the highlands for a few days taking photos for pleasure and without the pressures of wedding photography, is always a relaxing experience…. though the weather did it’s best to keep us indoors. Most shots were photographed in the rain!
Here’s a couple of shots of the area, including a bit of blue sky – a rarity on that occasion!!

A shot of Debs enjoying the warmth from the real log fire with myself messing about with the EOS 5d, impatiently waiting for the rain, sleet and snow to subside.

Elegant Shot Commercial Photographers Ayrshire
One of the shots taken for a kitchen utensil company in Glasgow:
Canon 24-105mm f/4 L and 580ex II Speedlite Flash
We received this commercial job at short notice, 12 noon today to be precise, and as it was required by close of play this afternoon, it was taken on board immediately. The kitchen utensils, 14 items, were couriered and arrived 30 mins after we’d rigged up the set, which also included a quick jaunt to the supermarket for the veg to include in the shots. Another 2 hours and all items had been photographed and edited to include text before being emailed to the Client at 4:35.
All in all, a successful afternoon and another happy Client.
